Heart disease and cancer are the top most health concern for men. Other health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, prostrate diseases, metabolic imbalance are also on rise. Healthy lifestyle choices can help to prevent some of these conditions. Avoid high risk habits such as smoking, drinking too much alcohol and having casual sex . Cardiovascular Diseases

Cardiovascular disease (CVS) are the leading causes of death globally. Coronary heart diseases (CHD) occur when the blood flow to heart muscle is reduced or blocked and lead to heart attacks/myocardial infarction. Stroke happens when the blood supply to a part of the brain is reduced or blocked. Arteries get blocked by buildup plaque which is deposits of fat, cholesterol and other substances. Heart attack may present as chest pain, cold sweat, fatigue, heartburn, shortness of breath. Women may present with sharp pain in the neck, arm or back. Some heart attacks are sudden but many have warning signs such as chest pain that doesn't go away. It is important to get help right away.

It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. High blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, family history of heart attack, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, stress all significantly increase the risk of heart diseases.

Diabetes

Diabetes results from high blood sugar/glucose. Glucose is made by the body and comes from food. Insulin is a hormone which regulates blood sugar levels. Exact cause of diabetes is unknown. Genetic and environmental factors play a role. Some warning signs are going to the toilet especially at night, feeling thirsty, tired, losing weight without trying, and frequent infections of skin.

Hypertension/High Blood pressure

Normal blood pressure is 120/80mmHg. A blood pressure of 130/80 mmHg or more is hypertension. It may go unnoticed due to lack of symptoms. Smoking, obesity and inactivity contributes to high blood pressure. High blood pressure makes the heart to work harder. Untreated high BP increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and other health issues. It is important to get blood pressure checked routinely especially if you have a family history of high BP.

Obesity / Weight Gain

Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excessive body fat that can negatively impact a person's health. It is typically measured using the body mass index (BMI), with a BMI of 30 or higher indicating obesity. Obesity increases the risk of various health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers. It can result from a combination of factors such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, genetics, and environmental influences. Managing obesity often involves lifestyle changes, including healthier eating habits and regular physical activity.

Belly Fat

Having excess belly fat can increase the risk of certain chronic conditions like diabetes. Healthy lifestyle with focus on diet and exercise can reduce belly fat and significantly lower the risk of metabolic diseases. Too much alcohol can contribute to belly fat. Limiting alcohol intake will reduce the waist size. Engage in activities that relieve stress.

Prostate Health

With age most men experience changing urination pattern. It is one of the most common reasons men visit doctors. Enlargement of prostrate, inflammation or cancer are often treated and can be prevented by getting PSA testing done especially if one has family history of prostrate diseases. Benign Prostrate hypertrophy (BPH) can lead to bothersome urinary symptoms. Lifestyle changes like exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, reducing caffeine and alcohol are helpful. If lifestyle changes alone don't work. medications are prescribed.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is common cancer in men. It starts with growth of abnormal cells in the prostate gland. Chances of having prostate cancer rise after age 50. Family history of prostate cancer, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), smoking, obesity, STIs are some of the risk factors. Some of the symptoms are problem urinating, blood in urine/semen, weight loss, pain in hip, back or chest. Diagnosis is by physical examination, imaging and biopsy.

It is important to have regular screening done for early detection and treatment. Digital rectal examination, PSA test and imagining are used as screening tests.

Other Cancers

i) Lung Cancer

Lungs are two spongy organs in the chest. People who smoke have the greatest risk of lung cancer. Risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked and the duration of smoking. Quitting smoking significantly reduces the chances of developing lung cancer. Exposure to second hand smoke also increases your risk of lung cancer. Other risk factors such as family history of lung cancer, previous radiation therapy, exposure to radon gas and others also puts you at more risk of developing lung cancer.

Don't Smoke - if you never smoked, don't Start. Stop smoking and avoid second hand smoke. Avoid exposure to toxic chemicals and follow a healthy lifestyle.
